Pineapple

Pineapple, scientifically known as ananas comosus, is an herbaceous biennial or perennial plant in the family Bromeliaceae grown for its edible fruit. The plant has 30 to 40 stiff succulent leaves closely spaced in a rosette on a thick fleshy stem.

Fruits of commercial varieties range from 1 to 2 kg (2 to 4 pounds) in weight. Pineapples in Kenya are mainly grown in Thika, Malindi and Kisii. The fruit has high sugar content and is rich in vitamins A and C. The most widely grown variety are smooth cayenne, Queen and the recently introduced variety called MD2.
